　ヴォネガットの作品は、主人公が時空を超えてさまよったり宇宙人が登場したりと、SF的要素が強い。しかし、ヴォネガット自身は、自分が「SF作家」のレッテルを貼られることに強く抵抗する。「わたしは“サイエンス・フィクション”と記されたファイルの引出しに、いやいやながら閉じこめられる身となった。わたしはそこから出たくてならなかった。（略）この引出しへ閉じこめられたければ、ことは簡単、テクノロジーに目を向ければよい。冷蔵庫の仕組みを理解できる人間が、同時にちゃんとした作家でありうるはずがないという考えが、いまなお根強く残っているらしい」（『ローズウォーターさん、あなたに神のお恵みを』解説、pp. 299-300）。
