イタリア軍は９９年以来、劣化ウラン兵器が使われた地域に入る際は防護マスク着用という規則があるのに、アフガンやイラクに派遣されている兵隊はそれを守っていないという。
今後、防護マスク着用は徹底されることになりそうだ。

(AGI) - Rome, Italy, Feb. 16 - Italian soldiers deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq do not wear protective masks that impede inhalation of depleted uranium dust, wrote Falco Accame, president of the Armed Forces Victims Association, in a letter to the Italian president. According to Accame, norms were issued by the United States in 1993 for the use of masks in order to "impede the inhalation of uranium oxide that deposits in the soil of areas bombarded by weapons containing depleted uranium, which can be carried by the wind." These norms are in effect for Italian forces since 1999. Accame also said that Italy has had "twenty deaths for suspected uranium contamination, and around 200 illnesses." (AGI) -

ここで注意したいのは、なぜ防護マスクが必要か、そしてそれはどういう種類の防護マスクなのか、ということです。
ニュースでは、アメリカ軍の規定は「impede the inhalation of uranium oxide that deposits in the soil of areas bombarded by weapons containing depleted uranium, which can be carried by the wind.（劣化ウランを含む兵器によって攻撃された地域の、風により運ばれ土壌に沈着した酸化ウランの吸入から防護する）」ために必要だ、と言っているだけで、「放射能」とか「放射性物質」とかは一言も言っていません。だいたい、普通の粉塵を防護するのと、放射性物質を防護するのとでは、マスクも防護服もかなり違っていると思うんですが（ここらへん、くわしい人のサポートをお願いします。難しいようなら自分で調べてみます）。
イタリア軍はどういう種類の防護マスクを着用するように、という司令が出されたのか、またそれは劣化ウラン弾の「放射能」からの防護なのか、までを調べたり伝えたりしないと、「反・劣化ウラン弾」としては有効でも、「劣化ウラン弾の放射性物質としての危険性による反・劣化ウラン弾」という主張にはならないのでは、と思います。砒素やカドミウムと同程度に、重金属として危険な物質が粉塵として存在しているような場所なら、普通にその粉塵を吸収しない防護マスクは必要だと思うんですが…。
まぁ要するに、「イタリア軍まで劣化ウラン弾は危険と思ってる」はいいんですが、「だから劣化ウラン弾は核兵器！　反核！」という主張は早急、ってことですね。
